The substantial expansion and renovation to the Museum at the Gateway Arch’s existing structure advances the Museum’s integration into the National Park and the surrounding urban environment, resulting in an intuitive visitor experience from the Park, the Courthouse, and from downtown St. Louis.Clark's Indian Museum was located on the present-day Arch grounds, and according to the St. Louis Directory of 1821, the museum was open to "any person of respectability at any time." Clark made a list of the 201 items in his museum, most of which were Indian artifacts from 19 tribes. For many visitors, the museum offered a glimpse of the west.
