A 1912 pamphlet by Frank Bond, the chief clerk of the General Land Office, announced that the purchase area covered 827,987 square miles (listed in the table below the map). When rounded to 828,000, this became the standard area cited. Once divided by $15 million, Bond's work spawned an oft-repeated conclusions that Louisiana cost 3 cents per acre.
