Louis XIV (r 1643-1715) had taken the lead. He had invented ballet and was its first star, dancing as the ancient Greek sun god, Apollo. In 1715, Louis XIV's five-year-old great-grandson succeeded him and became Louis XV. The duke of Orleans ruled as regent for Louis XV while the young king demonstrated no exceptional abilities.
